I was particularly moved by what I recently witnessed in Ukraine. Cemeteries growing at an alarming rate and overflowing with both traditional Ukrainian flags and what I now know to be the red and black flag used more during times of war and depicting Ukrainian blood spilled over the rich, dark Ukrainian soil. Graves are covered with flags, flowers and photos of loved ones who died defending their country. In the comfort of our UK homes it is easy to forget the longstanding and continuing impact of the conflict and the massive destruction and loss of life.
This is an ongoing series of paintings and includes a limited number of portraits of President Zelenskyy. These were inspired by photographs taken by Mads Nissen, who asked the President to focus on the deepest emotions he felt during the darkest hours of the war and what gave him strength.
The portraits are part of a wider series with proceeds being donated to charity.
