There’s an old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words, but in today’s world, where we have smart phones and thousands of images, is that really still true?

For me, portrait painting has always been a privilege and a deeply personal experience. Every face is unique and tells a different story and I feel I get to know the person/pet I’m painting during the process, from their eyes, the contours of their face and the way life’s challenges have left their unique mark.

I’m not ashamed to admit that even when I’m working from a photograph, I often find myself talking to the characters I’m painting as I strive to capture everything that is unique about them.

Just as it can be an emotional experience for me to paint someone so cherished, it can also be an emotional experience to commission a portrait of someone you love.

An oil painting, properly cared for, will outlive us all and it can capture the spirit of someone we love even if they are no longer around. So, if you have a special person, a best friend or a family pet and you would like this busy world to stop just for a moment, to look, to remember and to smile, why not get in touch.

I am a traditionally trained artist living on the south coast in Christchurch. I work predominantly using oils and I am passionate about creating a two dimensional representation of a three (arguably four!) dimensional person or pet. I also undertake memorial portraits where a much loved person or pet has passed and it’s an honour to be able to create something so personal that will bring comfort and fond memories, helping to bridge painful separations and fill the void. In addition to portraiture, I also paint local seascapes and landscapes either as original oil paintings, prints cards or postcards. I would be delighted to discuss any queries you might have.
